Five teams of firefighters have contained a "fully
involved" house fire blazing in Lane Cove, which has been posing a
"major traffic hazard" due to thick smoke in the area.
Fire services
were called to a property on the corner of Lihon Street and Burns Bay Road
shortly before 6pm on Wednesday, after receiving "numerous" reports
that a fire was blazing through the roof of the house.
An estimated 26 firefighters undertook "defensive firefighting"
to control the fire, spraying water from three sides of the property, in an
attempt to prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring properties.
While the
neighbouring properties were not affected, the house was destroyed, with the
roof partially collapsing shortly before the fire was contained around 7.30pm.
Spot fires remain alight inside the property as Fire &
Rescue NSW continue their efforts to extinguish the blaze.
The house owner
told Fire & Rescue NSW the house was unoccupied, but emergency services
have not yet been able to enter the house to confirm. Eight people were
evacuated from neighbouring properties.
Fire and Rescue NSW reported
that smoke from the blaze was "blanketing" the suburb, posing a major
traffic hazard to motorists in the area.
